Online Behavioral Targeting/Advertising Whoââ¬â¢s Watching Us? Chris Bobbitt Fall 2014 How far is a company willing to go to attract and keep customers? Over the years there have been several mediums for advertisers to try and entice the general population with specific products. First there was the print industry and full page ads showing off toys, fashion and many other products to consumers. Radio was wildly popular with musical, variety shows, sports broadcast, western, science fiction and so many other shows that were sponsored by food products, cleaning supplies, cigarette ads and so on to keep people listening and buying goods heard on their favorite stations. Bright, bold pictures would take up a full-page in the paper to sell dresses, appliances and automobiles. With the growth of technology, advertising started to get more and more personalized. With the inventions of the radio, television, personal computers and the internet throughout the years, companies adapted to the everchanging climate. An inside look at how an online targeting company operates and the lack of Federal regulation for behavioral targeting. Target advertising in Radio: For the first time, advertisers could put a voice to the ear of the consumer through the magic of radio. Jingles and famous actors would talk about many different products in the homes of Americans. Magazine and newspaper advertising were the main sources of advertising and radio brought excitement to the consumer like never before. Testimonials were a big part of radio advertising. A company would have an announcer declare soap, car, and cigarettes were better than any other out there and that a certified person declared it so.
